The first step to getting in shape is to commit to a daily 30-minute endurance activity that gets you breathing hard at your target heart rate. If you have never exercised, have health problems that limit activity, or are very overweight, then start with 10-minute intervals to begin, and gradually work up to 30 minutes. Slow and steady exercise burns fat, but it takes the body about 15 minutes of exercise to kick into the fat-burning mode.
